ANGELA - Angora Genetics Laboratory
ANGELA was founded in January 2013 and launched in February 2014, with the primary goal of enhancing Angora goat production. This includes improving kidding rates, refining various hair qualities, and increasing the overall hair yield per goat. The project aims to share its findings with the broader Mohair farming community, fostering greater interest and encouraging wider participation from other farmers.
As one of the principal mohair top processors and exporters in the world, we were seriously concerned about the steady decline in the production of greasy mohair in South Africa. So in 2011, the company launched one of its most ambitious projects to date.
To address this challenge, we established SAMIL Farming Pty Ltd with the goal of stabilizing and potentially increasing the supply of Mohair to processors. Through SAMIL Farming, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the growth and sustainability of the Mohair industry.
The project was set up in two parts:
To secure land for Angora goat farming and meet the needs of Mohair processors, we acquired the 1,250-hectare land and named our farm Woodlands.
Here, we operate a commercial flock of both angora ewes and ‘kapaters’ (18 to 24-month-old castrated male goats). The farm also serves as the foundation for our research and data called project Angela.
Additionally, we’ve recently expanded by introducing an Angus cattle herd in the north-eastern part of the Eastern Cape mountains.
To expand our land for Mohair farming, SAMIL Farming partners with progressive farmers in the industry to lease farms through collaborative partnerships. It is common practice for Mohair farmers to send some of their "kapaters" (wethers) to the abattoirs, generating cash flow and freeing up land and feed for the next generation of goats.
SAMIL Farming plays a vital role in stimulating economic growth, particularly in rural areas. Our efforts have had a positive impact on many lives by creating job opportunities in underserved communities while enhancing the supply of greasy Mohair to the industry.
The idea of forming partnerships with farmers to raise goats on their land was originally initiated by SAMIL's late chairman, Francis Patthey. The proceeds from Mohair sales are shared between SAMIL Farming and the partner farmer, benefiting both parties. Additionally, SAMIL Farming offers direct-line marketing to our partners through our own established channels. We are fully RMS certified and have an in-house auditor to ensure the highest standards.
In 1987, SAMIL took a significant step forward by establishing its own combing plant, Border Combing Company, in Berlin, located outside East London in the rural Eastern Cape.
As Mohair processing has declined in other regions of the world, SAMIL Combing—now the name of the plant—has emerged as one of the world’s leading Mohair processors adding significant value to the South African Mohair clip and providing permanent employment to 100 people in the region. Continued investment has been made in an energy efficient automated scouring line, sophisticated effluent treatment, modern carding and combing machinery and state of the art Mohair testing instruments.
More than 40% of the South African Mohair clip is processed by SAMIL Combing while Mohair from other regions such as Lesotho and Texas is also converted into tops here. Unlike many processing plants globally, SAMIL is exclusively dedicated to the scouring and combing of Mohair. The plant is designed to handle smaller lots on a separate production line, allowing customers to identify and trace exclusive lots from specific farming areas.
Located at the heart of the Mohair industry, SAMIL is ideally positioned to source sustainably produced Mohair from dedicated farmers. Every greasy bale is carefully evaluated by hand and eye before processing begins.
As most Mohair is sold and exported in processed form, SAMIL plays a crucial role in setting the global standard for Mohair tops while adding value and creating much needed job opportunities in the local economy. With committed representatives around the world, clients enjoy direct, face-to-face communication and access to Mohair tops either by stock service in main markets or direct shipments from the origin. This approach ensures quick response times to inquiries, consistent updates on market movements and efficient deliveries in a complex and dynamic environment.
